The steampunk arched doorway framed the whole Sonoran Desert behind him —
golden sunset, saguaros on the ridge, the warm amber light of a day well-traveled.
Vinny G walked through — backpack on, lantern at his hip, electric blue compass glowing in his hand —
and he was smiling. Not because the journey was over. Because he understood it now.
He had left to find something.
He had crossed the desert, followed the frequency, gone further than the map said to go.
And when he came back through the door — compass still glowing —
he realized the thing he went looking for had been with him the whole time.

“Gilbert landed on my arm the moment I stepped through the door.
Wings spread — clipboard raised — like he’d been waiting at the threshold the entire time I was gone.
He looked at me. Looked at the compass. Looked at me again.
Then he wrote: ‘SUBJECT RETURNED. COMPASS STILL ACTIVE. FREQUENCY CONFIRMED: NEVER LOST.’
I didn’t say anything. Neither did he.
We just stood there in the doorway for a moment — the desert behind us, the next chapter ahead.”
The return isn’t the end of the adventure — it’s the proof that you survived it.
